Across from the fortress stands Palazzo Contrari-Boncompagni, also known as Palazzo Barozzi. It speaks of a different age, when prestige was expressed through proportion, balance and architectural invention.
A residence for the Contrari
The palace was built between 1560 and 1567 for Ercole Contrari the Elder. Its design is attributed to the Vignola-born architect Jacopo Barozzi, while construction was entrusted to Bartolomeo Tristano. The building faces Piazza dei Contrari.
A staircase worth taking slowly
The palace's most striking feature is its helical staircase, renowned for its architecture and its 106 steps. Here technique becomes space: as the staircase rises, the geometry appears to shift with every step.
Details matter
Our book will look at the design, the building's later alterations and its decorative features, always distinguishing documentary evidence from traditional attributions.
