A fortress that changed its purpose as the town around it developed.

The Rocca is the most recognisable landmark in Vignola. Yet there is more to it than its castle-like silhouette: it reflects changing power, culture and landscape.

01

Origins: tradition and evidence

Local historical tradition places the fortress's earliest origins in the early Middle Ages, when this area was connected with the Abbey of Nonantola. That reconstruction should be distinguished from the first known documentary reference to the fortress, dating to 1178. The building as we know it is the result of later construction and alteration.

02

From defence to residence

During the fifteenth century, the Contrari family gradually transformed a defensive stronghold into a noble residence. Its exterior still spoke the language of power, while its interiors developed the refinements of courtly life.

Look more closely

One of the places to explore is the Contrari Chapel and its remarkable paintings. Our book will also examine how the fortress, square and river have shaped the town.
